March 12, 2020 (YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio) – Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley will introduce a new endowed scholarship this year as part of its annual nursing scholarship program.
Rashid Abdu, M.D., founder of the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center, endowed the scholarship in honor and in memory of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary. Inspired by the Sisters’ deep devotion to nursing and caring for the poor, and in recognition of the value of excellent nursing care, Abdu established the scholarship to help the next generation of caregivers achieve their goals.
Preference will be given to students enrolled at Mercy College of Ohio, Youngstown campus; Mercy Health Youngstown employees pursuing a BSN at any accredited university are also eligible.
The Rashid Abdu M.D. Scholarship in Honor and in Memory of the Sisters of the Humility of Mary will be awarded based on academic achievement, financial need, recommendation of the student’s college or university, and the student’s aspirations and motivations.
Ode to the Sisters
By your work and your lives, you showed us the way. For your help and guidance, we can never repay. Your souls are in heaven with the Lord we praise. Your legacy on Earth, no one can erase.
You touched our lives with your thoughts and your deeds, In our minds and in our thoughts, you planted the seeds. Forever and ever they will continue to grow,
And before we leave, to others we’ll bestow.
For your generosity, prayers and gentle touch, We in the Mahoning Valley thank you so much. With deep gratitude and love,
Rashid A. Abdu, M.D.
