Grey Nun Community Fund

The Grey Nun Community Fund was established to perpetuate the mission, values, and philosophy of the Grey Nuns by making grants to organizations in northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan that are devoted to improving and protecting the health and welfare of people. The Community Fund prefers to partner with organizations and make proactive grants through an open application process for eligible nonprofit organizations.

The Fund has established its funding priorities to reflect those of the Grey Nuns founder, Marguerite d’Youville and to include:

  • Underserved children and their families
  • The frail elderly
  • Those activities which reduce dependency, promote self-help, and create access to the economic mainstream
  • Those programs that address the underlying causes of poverty among children and families
  • Neighborhood efforts designed to empower families to work together to achieve specific and lasting improvements in their community

The Fund especially encourages applications from organizations:

  • That have limited opportunity for private or public support from other sources
  • That use innovative approaches designed to achieve specific and lasting improvements in the lives of the poor and underserved
  • That feed the hungry, clothe the naked, house the homeless, improve neighborhood collaborations, and provide access to health care

Applying to the Grey Nun Community Fund

Organizations that believe they meet the criteria described above may initiate contact with the Grey Nun Community Fund by submitting a Letter of Intent either by email or by US Mail. The Community Fund will accept a Letter of Intent at any time. The Community Fund will review each letter and respond to every applicant, typically within one month. Organizations meeting the priorities and criteria of the Community Fund will be invited by the Fund to submit a full proposal and asked to host Fund representatives for a site visit. The Fund’s grant-making is limited--awards typically range from $10,000 - $50,000. Periodically, the Fund will make multi-year commitments.
